Manchester Students Guide Part 1: Transportation

Updated: Mar 13

Welcome, this is my first guide to the Vietnamese students living and studying in Manchester

Part 1: Getting Around

In Manchester, there are many different types of transportation for students to use.

Walking on foot is the simplest option for people who like to travel around. Students can also use the bus to travel and explore Manchester. The bus ticket is 2£ for a single ticket and 5£ for one day. Students can also buy bus passes to have unlimited travel for one week, 20£ for only Stagecoach and 21£ for not only Stagecoach but also First Bus and other brands as well. For bus tickets you can do cash or card payment but bus passes are cash only so remember to bring some cash with you. There are also free buses to explore around Manchester as well.

Besides the buses, students can also use the Metrolink services which are usually called Tram. It is a yellow small train, you may see it sometimes on the road near the railways. Students can use Metrolink to buy tickets and go to the zone they want. There are different prices and choices in the ticket machine near the Metrolink station.

Another transportation is by bike. Around Manchester, there are lots of bikes for hire (the yellow one). You need to use an app to have access to the bike.

The final transportation is by train, not every student in Manchester studies in Manchester. For example, in my case, I live in Manchester but study at the University Of Chester, which is far away, that is why I use the train to travel to school. Students can apply for a railcard with 70£ for 3 years if they are undergraduates like me. Highly recommend the railcard because the prices will have a great discount if you intend to save money. Another piece of advice is to buy an E-ticket rather than waiting in a long line at the ticket counter for your turn.
