Manchester Students Guide Part 5: Explore (Optional)

This part is not about what is good for Vietnamese students, but more about exploring and learning culture in the UK through places of attractions in Manchester. Manchester has lots of museums and libraries for visitors to pay a visit, here are some places I feel interesting.

The Portico Library (57 Mosley St, Manchester M2 3HY)

Located near Arndale, the first time you come inside you will be asked by staff to do a check-in. The books inside the library are for decoration only, you can see a small shelf with books that you can take and read, and there is a café inside the library to rest. This library has information about the 19th century and exhibitions of China culture. You can find poems, arts, and literature here, there are biography shelves, but it is member access only. The library is free to access.

Not only Vietnamese students, but everyone has a strong bond and connection to football. This is the football museum, the first time you come here the staff will ask you to fill in some information and buy a ticket. The ground floor is a shop and café, the first floor is a matching gallery, you can see lots of trophies and football player shirts along with their history here. The second floor is a play gallery, as the name shows, only a game area here, you can be football players and practice penalty shoot or pass the ball. The third floor is the score gallery, which looks like an arcade, there is a virtual football headset inside and you will have to pass the ball through virtual reality to score.

John Rylands Research Institute and Library, (150 Deansgate, Manchester M3 3EH)

Large library with 3 areas, ground floor is a reception to give you instructions first time you come here, there are some books and furniture around. The first floor is an exhibition gallery, you can see information and history about the slavery of the Africans here. The second area is the history reading room, you can see lots of history books here, but you can’t touch them, on two sides of the main hall is study space, you can bring a laptop here to work. John Rylands looks like a study space more than a library, but the atmosphere of vintage construction will make you want to pay a visit here.
